Is Revolut Safe in the Netherlands? Bank Licence, Dutch IBAN and €100k Protection
TL;DR
Revolut Bank UAB is a licensed bank, has a Netherlands branch listed by De Nederlandsche Bank, and offers Dutch IBANs. Eligible deposits held with its Netherlands branch are covered by the Lithuanian deposit guarantee scheme up to €100,000 per depositor across aggregated Revolut Bank deposits, subject to exclusions. That protection does not cover every product, fraud loss, investment, crypto position, or access problem.
Is Revolut Safe in the Netherlands? Bank Licence, Dutch IBAN and €100k Protection
A regulator-first answer to whether Revolut is safe in the Netherlands: bank status, DNB register, Dutch IBAN, deposit insurance, and risks protection does not cover.
Separate Revolut's bank licence and deposit protection from the operational and product risks they do not remove.
Short answer: Revolut Bank UAB is a licensed bank with a Netherlands branch in De Nederlandsche Bank's public register, and Revolut offers Dutch IBANs. Eligible deposits with the Netherlands branch are insured by Lithuania's deposit guarantee scheme up to €100,000 per depositor across aggregated deposits, subject to exclusions. That is meaningful protection, but it does not make every Revolut product or every loss risk-free.
This answer was checked on 27 August 2026 against DNB's Revolut Bank UAB entry, the Bank of Lithuania register, and Revolut's Netherlands deposit insurance sheet.
For the wider product decision, compare Revolut, Wise, and bunq in the Netherlands.
Is Revolut a bank in the Netherlands?
Yes—Revolut Bank UAB is a bank. It is incorporated and licensed in Lithuania and is supervised as a credit institution by the European Central Bank and the Bank of Lithuania. It operates a Netherlands branch at Barbara Strozzilaan 201 in Amsterdam.
DNB's public register lists Revolut Bank UAB in the bank category and identifies Revolut as a trade name. Revolut's Dutch legal footer says the Netherlands branch is supervised by DNB and the Authority for the Financial Markets for applicable integrity and conduct-of-business rules.
That structure is different from saying Revolut has a stand-alone Dutch banking licence issued to a separate Dutch bank. The relevant bank is Revolut Bank UAB acting through its Netherlands branch.
Does Revolut give Dutch customers a Dutch IBAN?
Revolut's current Netherlands euro-account page says customers can save, send, and spend euros with a Dutch IBAN. It also says salary payments and direct debits can use that account.
Check the actual account details in your app before moving payments. Revolut explains that you can find the IBAN under Accounts → euro account → Details. Your legal entity is shown at the bottom of the profile screen.
The Dutch IBAN matters because it removes the practical friction that older reviews still associate with a foreign IBAN. It does not change the deposit-guarantee country by itself.
How does Revolut deposit protection work?
Revolut's current Netherlands deposit insurance information says:
- deposits with Revolut Bank UAB acting through the Netherlands branch are insured by Lithuania's Public Institution “Deposit and Investment Insurance”;
- the standard limit is €100,000 per depositor;
- multiple deposits with Revolut Bank UAB are aggregated for that limit;
- a joint account applies the limit individually to each depositor;
- compensation is generally paid within seven working days after an insured event;
- exclusions and certain temporary higher-balance cases apply.
The aggregation point is important. A €90,000 eligible savings balance and a €20,000 eligible current-account balance with the same bank do not create €110,000 of standard coverage. The standard maximum across aggregated eligible deposits remains €100,000 for that depositor.
Use the official information sheet for the legal detail. A summary cannot determine whether a specific balance or account qualifies.
Is Revolut covered by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee?
The Netherlands branch's published information sheet identifies the Lithuanian scheme, not the Dutch Deposit Guarantee administered by DNB. The standard EU protection level is still €100,000 for eligible deposits, but the administering scheme and process are different.
Compare that with bunq, whose eligible euro deposits are covered by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee. The protection ceiling alone is not the only distinction; the legal entity and scheme determine the claim path.
Are Revolut savings protected the same way?
Do not assume every item labelled “savings” has the same provider or protection.
Revolut's Netherlands help centre says Instant Access Savings can be held with Revolut or with a partner such as Deutsche Bank. Funds held with Deutsche Bank can fall under the German guarantee scheme; funds held with Revolut can fall under the Lithuanian scheme. The product terms and the entity displayed in the app determine the answer.
Flexible Cash Funds are different again: Revolut describes them as investments in money-market funds, with capital at risk. Deposit insurance language for a payment account does not transform an investment product into an insured deposit.
What deposit insurance does not protect
Deposit insurance is designed for a bank failure involving eligible deposits. It does not automatically reimburse:
- a card payment you authorised to a scammer;
- a transfer sent to the wrong recipient;
- investment or crypto losses;
- market-price changes in a money-market fund;
- every loss caused by stolen credentials or social engineering;
- inconvenience or loss caused by an account review, payment delay, outage, or support dispute;
- balances above the applicable insured limit, except where a special rule applies.
Fraud and card-payment disputes have their own rules. The outcome depends on authorisation, card-scheme processes, evidence, reporting speed, and the relevant terms.
Security controls you should enable
Revolut lists app-based controls including biometric access, two-factor authentication, instant card freezing, spending limits, and scam warnings. Use them, but do not outsource judgment to them.
My minimum setup for any travel or money app is:
- protect the phone with a strong passcode and current operating system;
- enable biometric app access and keep notification previews private;
- never share a one-time code or approve an unexpected login;
- freeze a missing card immediately;
- keep a second card and emergency payment route;
- verify the recipient and amount outside an urgent message thread;
- use in-app support instead of phone numbers from search ads or unsolicited calls.
DNB specifically warns that scammers impersonate the regulator and ask for banking credentials. A real regulator or bank employee does not need your PIN.
Should Revolut be your only account?
Licence and deposit protection answer the bank-failure question. They do not answer the resilience question.
For travel or a household operating system, a second account at an independent provider reduces the impact of a lost phone, frozen card, service outage, compliance review, or merchant acceptance problem. That is not a judgment unique to Revolut; it is a general single-point-of-failure rule.
I treat Revolut as a flexible money layer, not as a reason to eliminate every backup.
My verdict
Revolut has the core institutional facts I would require before considering a Netherlands payment account: a licensed bank, regulator entries, a Dutch branch and IBAN, and published deposit-insurance information.
The correct conclusion is not “risk-free.” It is: regulated, with eligible-deposit protection, and still subject to product, fraud, operational, and personal-security risks that require normal financial hygiene.
