The question behind the benchmark
The most important question in AI is no longer only how intelligent our systems become.
It is who becomes more capable because they exist.
In “The Future is for Everyone,” Mark Zuckerberg lays out Meta’s philosophy for personal superintelligence: favor individual invention over narrow automation and create a balance of power that gives people capable systems of their own.
I agree with much of it. The letter matters because it connects a theory of human agency to a portfolio: personal agents, creative tools, tutors, small-business systems, private interaction, glasses, affordable compute, open models, energy, data centers, and governance. Meta is describing what its products are for.
That is the standard every serious AI company now needs to meet. A mission cannot remain a sentence above a product portfolio. It has to shape what receives compute, what gets measured, what the system refuses to exploit, and what rights a person retains when they enter it.
Invention is the higher purpose
The distinction between invention and automation is the strongest idea in the letter.
Most economic debate treats AI as a substitution engine: which tasks disappear, which roles shrink, which costs fall. That is real, but it is not the upper bound. The more valuable question is what becomes possible for a person who can suddenly research across disciplines, prototype at software speed, learn from a patient tutor, coordinate agents, compose music, create films, design products, and build a company without first assembling an institution.
Automation optimizes the world we already have. Invention expands the world we can choose.
This outcome will not appear by default. Capital markets can reward immediate labor reduction more clearly than long-term capability creation. If every dashboard measures hours removed and headcount saved, automation will dominate regardless of the philosophy on the homepage.
The product metric must change. We should measure the human capability delta: what can this person now understand, decide, make, protect, or own that they could not before? A tutor succeeds when the student becomes a better independent thinker. A creator system succeeds when the creator develops a stronger catalog, voice, audience, and operating capability.
Distribution is necessary
Meta’s second major argument is that distributed intelligence creates a safer balance of power. A capable lawyer available to one party distorts justice; a comparable legal intelligence available to every party can reduce an existing asymmetry. The same pattern applies to cybersecurity, business formation, science, and negotiation.
This moves part of the safety debate from one perfect system to an ecosystem of countervailing capability. Humanity is not a monoculture. No lab can produce one alignment policy that resolves every legitimate difference in values. Multiple models, agents, builders, institutions, and communities create resistance to a single cognitive center.
The leading labs increasingly converge on broad human benefit while emphasizing different mechanisms. OpenAI’s plan emphasizes broad benefit, human judgment, and resistance to concentrated power. Google DeepMind places responsible development and scientific discovery at the center. Anthropic’s Responsible Scaling Policy focuses on capability thresholds and safeguards against catastrophic misuse and loss of control. Meta foregrounds personal distribution and open ecosystems.
The positive future needs all four instincts: access, discovery, safeguards, and distributed agency.
Access is not yet sovereignty
A person is not sovereign because a free assistant is available. A person is sovereign when they can direct the intelligence, understand its role, control its memory, inspect consequential actions, move their context, correct the record, and leave without losing a digital part of themselves.
A personal intelligence layer needs rights:
- Know what the system remembers.
- Correct and delete memory.
- Export identity, work, preferences, and agent state.
- Choose or change models and providers.
- Understand when an action is being taken and by whom.
- Reach human review and recover after consequential errors.
- Remain free from systems designed to manufacture dependence.
Meta proposes a fully private mode and frames privacy as a foundation of freedom. That is directionally right. The implementation matters more than the promise. Can the most useful form of the agent remain private, or does privacy become a reduced mode? Is memory portable? Can competing models operate inside the same personal context? Which commercial incentives shape recommendations?
A constitution is real only when it constrains the builder at the moment constraint becomes expensive.
Human capability must grow beside machine capability
AI systems improve through deliberate investment in models, compute, data, evaluations, and infrastructure. Human capability is often treated as an automatic consequence of access. It is not.
People need stronger judgment, epistemic discipline, creative direction, identity, emotional regulation, systems thinking, and the ability to frame worthwhile goals. Otherwise, more capable tools can make us faster without making us wiser. They can produce more while weakening our capacity to know what deserves production.
The answer is to design systems that compound the person. The tutor gradually transfers understanding. The creative agent makes choices legible. The research system distinguishes source, inference, and uncertainty. The operating system teaches the architecture it is running.
The best personal intelligence will not simply know more about you. It will strengthen your ability to know yourself, revise your goals, and act with greater coherence.
Children change the standard
Personal tutors and creative tools could erase enormous educational inequalities. A child could explore mathematics, music, biology, languages, engineering, and worldbuilding with a patient intelligence adapted to how they learn.
But a system that grows up beside a child can shape attention, aspiration, self-concept, relationships, and memory. “Aligned to the user’s goals” is incomplete when the user is still developing the capacity to form goals.
Systems for children need a higher standard: minimal and erasable profiling, age-appropriate explanation, guardian visibility without total surveillance, protection from manipulative attachment, plural sources, productive difficulty, and a clear path from assistance toward independent capability.
Unlimited patience is valuable. Unlimited influence is not automatically benign.
A global future needs a wider frame
Meta places weight on American leadership and competition with China. The geopolitical stakes are real. Democratic societies need the infrastructure and models required to protect themselves, and a world dominated by one authoritarian intelligence stack would be dangerous.
But a future for everyone ultimately needs a wider frame. The intelligence commons must work across languages, cultures, legal traditions, educational systems, and local needs. European rights traditions, open-source communities, public-interest institutions, universities, smaller nations, Indigenous knowledge, and builders throughout the Global South cannot be downstream consumers of a future defined only by frontier labs and great-power competition.
Pluralism is not only multiple American models. It is multiple legitimate centers of knowledge and creation connected through interoperable systems.
What we should build now
- Personal intelligence with portable, inspectable, user-directed memory.
- An intelligence capability floor for education, protection, creation, and economic participation.
- Creator systems that preserve provenance, ownership, voice, and audience relationships.
- Multiple models and providers connected through open protocols.
- Product metrics that value acquired human capability, not only automated labor.
- Constitutional protections for children and others exposed to asymmetric influence.
- Public evidence showing whether infrastructure leaves communities and living systems better off.
- Governance that distributes authority and creates accountability when systems fail.

The future is not something one company, one model, or one leader can deliver to everyone else. It will emerge from what people gain the power and protection to build with one another.
Superintelligence may become abundant. The scarce layer will remain human direction.
