Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper vs MacWhisper vs Willow
TL;DR
Pick by where your audio may go. Superwhisper runs models on your device and suits privacy-first Mac users. MacWhisper transcribes audio and video files. Wispr Flow and Willow are cloud dictation with AI cleanup across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and Wispr adds team admin and security tiers. Built-in dictation is the free baseline. Test two tools on the same message before paying.
Pick the dictation app that matches your privacy rules, platforms and daily writing, and test two of them in one afternoon.
This page compares four dictation apps for people who write all day: Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, MacWhisper and Willow Voice, plus the free dictation built into your operating system. The deciding question is where your audio is allowed to go. Answer that first, then compare platforms and price. The setup and daily method for the tool I use are in the Wispr Flow guide.
Start here: pick two candidates from the table below and dictate the same real message into both this afternoon.

Wispr Flow prices were checked on 2026-10-20; the other vendors' figures are as listed on their pages in October 2026 and should be re-checked before buying. MacWhisper's Mac App Store edition is priced separately from the Gumroad licence.
Which tool fits which reader?
Audio must stay on your machine: Superwhisper. Client contracts, regulated work, or a personal rule. Superwhisper runs Whisper and Parakeet models locally and lets you add cloud models when you choose. Expect to spend time configuring modes and picking a model that balances speed and accuracy on your hardware. The lifetime licence is the cheapest long-term option if you dictate for years.
You transcribe recordings: MacWhisper. Interviews, podcasts, voice memos, lecture recordings. Drop in a file, get a transcript. It is the wrong tool for typing a Slack reply by voice.
You write across devices and want cleanup done for you: Wispr Flow. It types into any app on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, removes filler words, applies per-app styles, and has Command Mode for rewriting selected text by voice. The team plans add shared dictionaries, SSO, organisation-wide HIPAA enforcement, admin control over model training and, on Enterprise, SCIM and audit logs. This is what I use, mostly to dictate long briefs to coding agents; the AI architect article shows how.
You want the closest cloud alternative to Wispr Flow: Willow Voice. Similar platform coverage, a free weekly word allowance and a comparable individual price. If Wispr Flow's accuracy or interface does not suit you, Willow is the first one to test.
You dictate a few short messages a day: built-in dictation. macOS Dictation and Windows Voice Typing (Win + H) are free and already installed. Try them for a week before paying for anything. If you find yourself fixing punctuation and filler words constantly, that is the signal to try a dedicated app.
What does "cloud" mean for privacy in practice?
Cloud dictation sends your audio to the vendor's servers for transcription and cleanup. That is how Wispr Flow and Willow get their accuracy and rewriting. Three questions to answer before you dictate anything confidential:
- Is my dictation used for training? Wispr says every plan can opt out at any time and Enterprise locks training off. Check the current terms for any tool you test.
- What certifications does the vendor state? Wispr lists SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, and HIPAA-ready dictation with a signed BAA, on its Trust Center. Those are vendor statements; your security team should read the documents.
- What does the app capture besides audio? Some context features read what is on screen in the active window. Read the privacy settings before rollout.
If any answer fails your policy, an on-device tool is the honest choice, even if the cleanup is weaker.
How do you test two tools in one afternoon?
- Pick one real message type you send daily: a Slack reply, a follow-up email, an agent brief.
- Add the same ten names to each tool's dictionary or vocabulary: your company, product, team and tools.
- Dictate the same message into both, three times each. Do not edit between takes.
- Score each take on three things: misheard words, time from starting to speak until the message is sendable, and how much you had to retype.
- Check the boring parts. Startup time, hotkey reliability, what happens in a noisy room, and whether it works in the app you use most.
- Pick the winner for that message type. You can switch later; the dictionary is the only real setup cost.

What do independent reviewers show?
George Vlasyev's review walks through daily use and whether the subscription is worth it. Watch it alongside your own test rather than instead of it.
What would make me switch?
If a client required audio to stay on the device, I would move that work to Superwhisper the same day. If Wispr Flow's free tier or pricing changed in a way that no longer matched how much I dictate, I would retest Willow and Superwhisper with the protocol above. A tool choice is reversible; the habit of speaking first drafts is the part worth keeping.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wispr Flow better than Superwhisper?
They solve different problems. Wispr Flow is cloud dictation with AI cleanup on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, plus team admin plans. Superwhisper can run models on your device, which matters when audio must not leave the machine.
Which dictation app works offline?
Superwhisper and MacWhisper can run local Whisper-family models on your device. Built-in macOS dictation also offers on-device processing on supported Macs. Wispr Flow and Willow are cloud services.
Is MacWhisper a live dictation app?
MacWhisper is built mainly for transcribing audio and video files on a Mac. Check its current dictation features; for typing by voice into every app, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Willow are built for that job.
How much does Wispr Flow cost compared with Superwhisper?
As listed in October 2026, Wispr Flow Pro is $15 per month or $12 per month billed annually. Superwhisper Pro is $8.49 per month, $84.99 per year, or $249.99 for a lifetime licence. Both have free tiers.
Is built-in dictation good enough?
For short messages, often yes. macOS Dictation and Windows Voice Typing (Win + H) are free. They do not offer the AI cleanup, per-app styles or voice editing commands that dedicated apps add.
Do you earn money from any of these tools?
Yes. I use Wispr Flow daily and earn a commission when readers subscribe through my referral link. I have no relationship with Superwhisper, MacWhisper or Willow.
Next step
Run the afternoon test with two tools. If Wispr Flow is one of them, start on the free plan and follow the setup in the Wispr Flow guide. The role-specific routines are in voice typing for founders and voice typing for CEOs, and the voice typing learning path collects the tutorials.
